01.26 vinyl podcast - Colonel Bagshot

On this show, I play a track called “Six Day War” by a British group called Colonel Bagshot, recorded for the Cadet Concept label in 1971. Cadet Concept was an imprint of the Chess and Cadet label created by Marshall Chess, son of Leonard Chess and nephew of Phil Chess, the founders of the label. Leonard and Phil had done well with Jazz, Blues and Soul records, but Marshall was young and was interested in Rock and Roll and Psychedelia, and Cadet Concept was his pet label for high concept projects like Rotary Connection.

I wasn’t really able to find any information about Colonel Bagshot, other than that they were from Liverpool. This track is a spare and haunting retelling of the march to war. You might recognize this from a track called “Six Days” on Dj Shadow’s album The Private Press, which samples large chunks of the Colonel Bagshot song.

The Six Day War, also known as the June War, was fought in 1967 between Israel and Egypt, Jordan and Syria. This was the war which put the Gaza Strip and West Bank under Israeli control. In rhetoric about the situation in Israel and Palestine, there tends to be a lot of talk about pre- and post-1967 borders, which refer to the borders before and after this war.

I know the personnel of Colonel Bagshot…….Kenny Parry,Brian farrell,Dave Dover & Terry McCusker…They recorded in England for Parlophone (Beatles british label) and later Polydor.
They were produced by Allan Clarke of the Hollies (featuring Graham Nash) and were managed by Chas Chandler (who also managed Jimi Hendrix)
they changed their name to “Bunny” after lead singer Brian Farrell went solo
and they also were members of Eric Burdon’s Barrell for a spell before touring Europe supporting 70’s british superstars “Slade”

Three members of the group still play together in an amazing country band called “Hambone” and are still recording on their own label.
